Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh – In a moment of pride for Chhattisgarh, Pandi Ram Mandavi, a 68-year-old artist from the Gond Muria tribe, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for his unparalleled contribution to traditional musical instruments and wood craftsmanship. With a career spanning five decades, Mandavi is the sole recipient of this honor from Chhattisgarh among the 113 Padma Shri awardees this year.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Mandavi specializes in crafting the ‘Sulur,’ a traditional bamboo flute, an art form passed down through generations in his family. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I left school in Class 4, but my father taught me our ancestral skills of wood craftsmanship. Although he never received formal recognition, it’s because of him that I am being honored today. All credit goes to my father.”
Guardian of Bastar’s Cultural Heritage
Mandavi’s work goes beyond preserving Bastar’s cultural legacy. His intricate woodwork, embossed paintings, sculptures, and traditional instruments have gained global acclaim, showcasing the rich heritage of the region. Through his efforts, he has not only protected Bastar’s cultural identity but also redefined it for the modern era.
“My dream is to establish a museum in my village to showcase my artwork. It would serve as a learning hub for future generations to carry forward this art. I hope the government supports this vision,” Mandavi expressed.
Taking Bastar to the World Stage
Mandavi has represented India as a cultural ambassador, exhibiting his creations in at least eight countries. His art has captured international attention, putting Bastar’s heritage on the global map. In addition to his personal accomplishments, Mandavi has trained over 1,000 artisans through his workshop, ensuring the continuity of traditional crafts in the region.
Recognition and Responsibility
This recognition marks a historic moment for Chhattisgarh, highlighting the state’s vibrant tribal art and culture. Mandavi’s honor is a testament to the region’s rich heritage and the resilience of its artists. His family and community are elated at the acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting traditional art forms.
As Chhattisgarh celebrates this moment, Pandi Ram Mandavi’s story inspires countless artisans and underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage. His dream of a village museum symbolizes a larger vision: a future where traditions are cherished, taught, and celebrated.
