The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing a gross merchandise value (GMV) of Rs 4 lakh crore within the first 10 months of the current fiscal year (FY25), as per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This marks a 50% growth compared to the same period last year.
As of January 23, 2025, the GeM recorded a GMV of Rs 4.09 lakh crore. The services segment emerged as a key driver of this growth, contributing Rs 2.54 lakh crore, or 62% of the total GMV. The product segment accounted for Rs 1.55 lakh crore, representing 38% of the GMV.
The services segment has witnessed a remarkable 100% growth over the previous fiscal year, buoyed by the addition of 19 new service categories. Notable services introduced on the platform include debit card printing, bulk email services, dark fiber leasing, and data center operations management. These offerings have enabled government entities to procure specialized services efficiently, ensuring reliability and cost-effectiveness.
Among government entities, central ministries have significantly contributed to the GMV growth. The Ministry of Coal emerged as the top procurer, with transactions totaling Rs 1.63 lakh crore. Over 320 high-value bids worth approximately Rs 42,000 crore were placed by coal PSUs for handling and transport services. Other top procuring ministries include Defence, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Power, and Steel.
Since its inception, GeM has facilitated over 2.59 crore orders, achieving a cumulative GMV of Rs 11.64 lakh crore. The portal also set a single-day record this fiscal by processing 49,960 orders, showcasing its efficiency and growing adoption among stakeholders.
The GeM’s robust growth trajectory highlights its role in transforming public procurement by fostering transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity in government purchases.
